An Interview With Dr. Jenkins, A Qualified Dentist In Arvada

How is a bridge different than a crown?

A bridge is two or more crowns connecting a gap where a tooth is missing. The teeth on either side of the gap are crowned and connected with a "pontic " that is shaped like the tooth it is replacing.

How long will a crown last?

The longevity of the crown is dependent on several factors involving the oral hygiene and biting forces of the patient as well as the skill of the dentist and his or her laboratory; The patient must clean around the crown thoroughly to prevent recurrent decay from forming around the tooth underneath the crown's margins. If recurrent decay forms, it must be replaced. This can happen in as few as six months from the time the crown is placed if it is not properly maintained. If oral hygiene is impeccable, the crown can last a life-time. The occlusion or "bite " must be perfect in order to prevent wearing through the crown or breaking its porcelain shell. If the patient grinds his or her teeth or has a "heavy bite," they may grind through the crown even if it is perfect at the time that it is placed. The prepared tooth must be shaped in such a way that it will mechanically retain the crown. If the tooth is poorly shaped and the crown falls off, it may need to be re-cemented or re-made.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that provide full coverage for teeth that are cracked or broken or have been endodontically treated. They provide support for the tooth when its structure is weakened and lacks the integrity to hold up to normal biting and chewing forces.

When is a crown necessary?

Crowns are necessary when the tooth has been cracked or broken and cannot be repaired with a simple filling. They are also necessary for teeth that have had a root canal treatment and are in danger of breaking due to their structural damage.
