What are dental crowns?
A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles the visible portion of a tooth or dental implant which is at or above the gum line. When a tooth becomes badly damaged or extensively decayed, crowns are used to restore a tooth's shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance. Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth's new outer surface. Crowns can be made out of porcelain (meaning some sort of dental ceramic), metal (a gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of both.
When is a crown necessary?
Crowns may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or damaged a great deal by decay and as a result, a filling can't replace enough of the tooth or make the tooth strong enough. A crown may hold together parts of a cracked tooth. Crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discolored teeth.
How long will a crown last?
Crowns usually last at least seven years. In many cases they last much longer, some up to 40 years or so.
How is a bridge different than a crown?
A bridge is basically more than one crown fused together in order to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. Crowns on the other hand are necessary to restore existing individual teeth and not to replace missing teeth.
Why do crowns fail?
Crowns fail for several reasons, the main one being decay at the crown margin. Other reasons include fracture of the porcelain, wear, and periodontal disease. The most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your crown or bridge is to practice good oral hygiene. A bridge can lose its support if the teeth or bone holding it in place are damaged by dental disease. Keep your gums and teeth healthy by brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing daily. Also see your dentist and hygienist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings.
