An Interview With Dr.Sadhani Savani, DDS, A Qualified Dentist In Glendora

1. Are the non-metal crowns as strong as metal crowns?

After years of answering that question with a resounding "no," I am happy to report I can now say "YES!" The non-metal crowns of today are a great alternative for patients who require the highest esthetic result. This means a more natural reflection of light through the crown that metal prevents and also no more gray line along the gumline due to metal getting exposed after the gum has receded. I highly recommend non-metal crowns for any work done on the teeth in the smile line (teeth that show when you smile). You will be glad you did.

2. Does insurance cover the cost of a crown?

Insurance typically will cover a portion of the crown fee. The most common amount I see covered is 50%. Often if the patient would like a non-metal crown, there is an upgrade fee due to the higher lab costs.

3. Is a Bridge necessary?

If you are missing one or more teeth and have teeth on either side of the missing teeth, a bridge may be a good option. The reason to not leave the space is that the other teeth may start to shift. So we always recommend filling the space with either a bridge, implants, or a partial denture if possible.

4. If you have a bridge do you have to watch what you eat?

No you don' t. A bridge will function like a normal tooth. The big difference comes when it comes to flossing. Since a bridge is one piece and can comprise of 3 or more teeth, you cannot floss through those teeth normally. You use an aid called a floss threader (which can be purchased at your local drug store) to help clean the areas under the bridge. This is very easy to do and your dentist can demonstrate when the bridge is cemented in.

5. Who should get a bridge?

Anyone who is missing a tooth may want to discuss this option with their dentist.

6. What is the process for obtaining a dental bridge?

It requires two appointments. During the first, the dentist will prepare the supporting teeth for crowns and take an impression or mold to send to the lab. That day the patient will be sent home with a temporary bridge in place. Two weeks later the patient must return for the cementation of the final bridge.
